As a parent, taking my son to the Racine Public Library has been a tradition for us ever since he was little. I’ve watched the library grow and change over the years, but one thing has remained constant – it’s always been a welcoming and exciting place to be.

One of the things that makes RPL so special is its “Beyond Books” collection. My son and I have checked out all sorts of items from this collection over the years, from a radon detector (saved me $300 when I bought my home!) and board games to STEM activities and robots. It’s a great way to explore new hobbies and interests without having to commit to buying expensive equipment or supplies.

But it’s not just the “Beyond Books” collection that keeps us coming back to the library. The Youth Services section is always bustling with activity, with friendly staff members who are happy to recommend books and programs for kids of all ages. My son has attended many of the library’s events and workshops over the years, and he’s always come away with new skills and experiences.

Recently, the library underwent renovations to update its spaces, and the results are impressive. The children’s area has been expanded and updated with new furniture and technology, and the Teen Zone is now a cool and inviting space for older kids to hang out and study. The library has also added a new Makerspace, where visitors can explore their creativity and learn new skills with tools like 3D printers and laser cutters. There’s even a new podcasting studio!

Beyond Books at Racine Public Library

One of the things that we always look forward to is the Friends of the Library book sale room. It’s a great way to find new reads at an affordable price, and the proceeds go towards supporting the library’s programs and services. My son and I love browsing through the wide selection of books, DVDs, and other items, and we always come away with a few treasures. (Watch for their HUGE sales, which usually fall in July and December!)

It’s been amazing to watch my son grow and learn alongside the Racine Public Library. We’ve shared countless memories and experiences there, and I know that there are many more to come. Whether we’re browsing the shelves, attending a program, or just enjoying the comfortable spaces, the Racine Public Library has truly become a home away from home for us.
